Naomi VanDoren Profile 2020.jpg

Are you a creative? What are the essential tools that you use for your creative practice? Would you consider them to be strange or out of the box? What tools serve multiple functions in your process?

I’m really excited to be partnering with Wacom to bring you a special treat — An article all about creating illustrated novels and more specifically how I use a tablet for each stage of the process!

As an author and illustrator I have been using Wacom tablets for over a decade and they’ve become an essential tool in my creative process. Almost every illustration I finish has been edited at some stage on one of my tablets. My sketches, my linework, a lot of times my fully finished pieces, and everything in between. What’s in between, you may ask? Storyboarding, thumbnails, worldbuilding, and even layout design! In this article, I take you through the key stages of completing an illustrated novel and how I use a tablet to do so.

Writing
As a visual person, writing isn’t just about putting words on the page, it's also about outlining a story that takes you on a journey!

Thumbnails & Worldbuilding
An essential part of any book, especially a fantastical one!

Final illustrations
Combining mixed media and creating consistency across an entire book.

Layout and Design
Getting ready for print.

And more!

Head on over Wacom’s blog to read the entire article, and learn how I incorporate each of these stages with Wacom!
