Tokyo & The Yosakoi Festival

While Anson's brother, Tim, was here we took him to Tokyo to see the sights. Our first stop was the area of Tokyo called Harajuku. Famous for it's alternative styles it's a really fun place to go and people watch. Actually a lot go here to people watch or be seen. Sort of a like a catwalk for those that want to show off their fashion sense. At the beginning of Harajuku's Takeshita Street is a video screen projecting where most people stand to get a shot of the crowded street.

Stepped inside this shop to have a look around and it was packed with all kinds of incredibly detailed costumes. And by packed I mean I was brushing by all of the costumes on a row to get through, and I'm fairly slender.

One of the many shopping malls nearby. I love the glass and reflections when you enter here, riding up the elevator makes you feel like you're entering some magical cave.

To our surprise and delight the Yosakoi Festival was happening just around the corner, a parade like event with teams of dancers in costume.

Each team was led by a truck a with their group's leader riding and directing the next steps in their dance. Some of these groups even had live singers with them, though not all. The groups themselves were all in amazing costume. All of the groups are required to use naruko (wooden hand clappers) in their dance. The dances themselves were quite elaborate and the dancers were quite good. (More about the Yosakoi Festival)

These guys loved their part of the performance, you can tell. Since we were at the end of the parade line and there was time these guys stayed and did all kinds of moves for us.

Crossing the street to head back to the station. A view of the street.

In Shibuya we ran across this guy that we had also rode up on the train with. I knew he was a painter on the train by his painted pants and can of brushes.

I didn't feel like photos were enough to experience this so I did a quick edit of the video I took, literally dumped the clips into iMovie, so you could hear and see what it was like. Also at the end I've added a few clips of catching the train home and Shibuya crossing.
