Squared Oriental Quilt

I have been wanting to share with you my favorite and first quilt that I have ever made. I considered it my "Asian Quilt" for a long time until recently when I created my kimono quilt. So now I've given it a new name, my Squared Oriental quilt. This quilt was started in late 2009 and completed the next year. I really enjoyed this project as most of it was created with the help of my mom. We work well as a sewing team. As I said before, this was my first completed quilt... I had sewn lots of small things before this, quilt blocks, crafts and even some costumes.

Piecing the quilt was fairly easy: just simple straight stitching. I cut 2 of each fabric for each block design. After lots of rotating and placement we decided on the rest. I find that I really enjoy this point in the creative process of a quilt, arranging and rearranging the pieces that make up the whole.

Once the front and back were finished we tried a method I intend to repeat in future for basting: sandwiching the front, batting and back we used a long and narrow board to wrap up the quilt. As we basted we unwrapped the quilt from the board, letting the now secured quilt hang from the table. Here Gil is helping me baste and you can see the board we used.

To finish the quilt we actually quilted it on the same machine at home. All of the squares were quilted just inside each square and the border followed the outline of most of the flowers. It ended up being quite intricate work but once I got the hang of it it went smoothly. I'm so glad I spent the extra time with the border. It is probably my favorite part of the quilt.
