Indonesia Trip - Day 7

Monday, January 20th

I'm having technical difficulties, and this is the fourth time I've started writing this only to have it completely disappear in a puff of technology. Hopefully this time it sticks. It's Wednesday now, and we're in Bali enjoying the next part of our vacation, but I'm a few days behind so this post is about our day on Monday.

We started the morning with a trip to the Netaiken school that Clive introduced us to when we hiked up to the waterfall with him and some of the students there. I've written down my thoughts on the school and how excited I am for it and other projects like it, but that's for another time and another place. We got there just at the end of their morning session, and were able to sit in on the last few minutes of the class and then spend some of the break time sharing with them some pictures of where we live in Japan and some Girl Scout cookies we'd brought (thin mints... yum!)

After we said our goodbyes, we stopped at an apotik (drug store) on the corner for some malaria meds to bring back with us just in case, and ran some other errands in town. We had lunch at Papa Ron's again, and then back to the guest house. We had originally planned to try to fit in a beach trip, but it was a bit later than we wanted, and we had both really gotten used to the afternoon naps we've been taking, so we opted for that instead.

When we got up, I still felt really worn down, and possibly sick, so instead of a big trip we just meandered around town for a bit on the motorcycle, ending up down at the end of the airstrip near the lake. There's a dock-like structure going out into the lake for some of the landing lights for the airport, and it seemed to be a local hangout for school kids, so we stopped there briefly for some pictures and a break from sitting on the bike.

We spotted a nice hill a bit up the road with the radar tower for the airport, so that was our next destination. It just kept going from there... each new spot we stopped showed us another place we wanted to see, so we were out for a bit longer than we had planned, but got some neat pictures. At the end of the road was a little wooden foot bridge going out to a small island with a village on it. We stopped and said hi to the kids there and walked over to the village. Lots of fun, and sort of funny to see things like TV satellite dishes on the little houses there. Technology is everywhere!

We had dinner once we got back into town, at the same place we'd eaten with Clive the night before. Back at the guesthouse we packed up our bags for our morning departure, and made it to bed pretty early. The day didn't go exactly as we'd planned, but it was great nonetheless, and we both felt like our time in Sentani couldn't have been any better.

Stay tuned for the trip to Bali and the adventures there, coming soon!
